Aurafy Art is a made-to-order studio where every piece is hand-painted after you place your order. This guide covers five essential considerations for sizing a large abstract painting for your wall:
- Match the Painting to Your Space
- Test the Size on Your Wall Before You Order
- How Large Paintings Ship Without Damage
- See the Real Color Before It Ships
- What Happens If the Size Still Feels Wrong
Match the Painting to Your Space
A large abstract painting that is undersized reads as an afterthought on the wall. Oversized, and the space feels compressed and visually cluttered. The right proportion depends on where the painting is placed. Here are the sizing principles for three common configurations:
Above a sofa.

For a 200cm sofa, the painting should span 120 to 150cm in width — roughly 60 to 75 percent of the sofa's total width. Exceeding that ratio disrupts the visual balance of the entire wall.
For vertical placement, maintain 15 to 20 centimeters between the sofa's upper edge and the painting's lower edge. This interval allows the two elements to register as a cohesive unit. Collapse that gap, and the painting appears to rest on the cushions. Extend it too far, and the wall breaks into disconnected zones.
A large open wall.

Entryways, stairwells, and double-height living rooms tend to overwhelm small-scale work. Large scale abstract paintings, oversized abstract paintings, or extra large abstract paintings suit these spaces well — the spatial volume carries them naturally.
For width, apply the same ratio: half to three-quarters of the wall. For height, in rooms with 3-meter ceilings or above, raise the painting's center to approximately 65 inches from the floor. The negative space beneath the painting becomes an active part of the composition.
Bedroom headwall.

For width, align the painting with the bed, ensuring it does not extend beyond the headboard or the bed frame, whichever is broader.
For height, center the painting within the wall space above the headboard — not at the midpoint of the entire wall. The headboard serves as the visual foundation. Measuring from the floor pushes the painting too high, creating the impression that it has detached from the bed entirely.
In a bedroom, the painting holds a privileged position — the last image before sleep and the first upon waking. Precise placement is what distinguishes a restful focal point from an unsettling one.
REFERENCE POINT: Center the painting at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This follows gallery-standard practice and translates well to most residential settings. Adjust from there based on ceiling height and furniture scale.
Test the Size on Your Wall Before You Order
Dimensions listed on a product page are difficult to internalize. How large is 36×48 inches? Approximately the footprint of a standard interior door. How large is 48×60 inches? Comparable in area to a large-format television.
Those figures remain conceptual until the shape is rendered on your actual wall. One method reliably bridges that gap before any purchase is made:
The paper mock-up. Cut newspaper or kraft paper to the precise dimensions and affix it to the wall. Leave it in place for a day or two.
Observe it in varying light conditions throughout the day. Within 48 hours, the proportion will either feel spatially resolved — or it will not. If it holds after extended observation, the size is almost certainly correct.
This step becomes increasingly critical as scale increases. A large abstract painting that appears well-proportioned on a screen can register very differently against a 3-meter wall. Ten minutes of cutting and taping can spare you the cost and inconvenience of a return.
How Large Paintings Ship Without Damage
Large-format paintings are susceptible to transit damage. The greater the scale, the higher the risk. Purpose-built packaging is the primary safeguard. Here is how Aurafy Art handles it:
- Rolled canvases ship in rigid paper tubes engineered to prevent surface creasing and compression damage.
- Framed works ship in custom wooden crates designed to absorb impact and immobilize the frame throughout transit.
Every shipment carries full door-to-door insurance, built into the purchase price. No supplementary coverage is required and no deductibles apply. If a piece arrives damaged, submit a photograph — a replacement is dispatched at no additional cost.
The liability for transit risk rests with the studio, not the buyer.
See the Real Color Before It Ships
Color discrepancy between screen and wall is a well-documented issue in online art purchasing. Every display calibrates color differently. A cool gray on your monitor may read noticeably warmer on the wall, particularly under incandescent or low-temperature evening light. For a work in the $600 range, that variance carries real consequence.
AurafyArt's process is designed to address this before the painting leaves the studio:
Progress photos and video. During production, the artist sends photographs and a short video of the work in progress, captured in natural light. These materials convey the actual pigment on canvas — the surface texture, the paint weight, and the tonal relationships as they exist in the physical piece. If anything falls outside your expectations, that dialogue takes place while the work can still be adjusted.
What Happens If the Size Still Feels Wrong
Even with precise measurement and a physical mock-up, a painting can read differently once installed. Ambient light shifts throughout the day. The surrounding palette of furniture and walls exerts influence. Variables that were invisible during planning become apparent only once the work is in place.
A transparent return policy removes that residual uncertainty:
- 30-day return window. A full refund is issued without a restocking fee or approval process. Return shipping is the buyer's responsibility.
- Damaged pieces. Verified by photograph, with a free replacement dispatched immediately. All shipments carry full insurance coverage.
- Shipping included. Every order ships free to any country. Import duties remain the buyer's responsibility; the team provides assistance with customs communication where required.
Thirty days is sufficient time to evaluate the work across the full range of conditions in your home — morning light, evening light, and everything between.
